The suitability of zebrafish (danio rerio) as an optimal organism to further investigate the associated schizophrenia-like phenotype

Introduction Zebrafish ( Danio rerio ) has evolved over the years as a preferred organism due to its vast repertoire in research fields that mimic targeted phenotype, particularly behavioral typologies and specific attributes comparable murine models relatively high homology with humans. Considering this consideration, different pharmacological treatments have been tested proven under concentrations may trigger schizophrenia (SCZ)-like symptoms. Objectives Starting from actual stage of knowledge according which agents used N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) inhibitors (MK-801, ketamine, phencyclidine) alongside psychedelic (mescaline, lysergic acid diethylamide), psychoactive substances (amphetamine), non- essential amino acids (proline methionine), we aimed reunite review all existing evidence. This approach offer an updated critical overview regarding possible future directions surrounding these compounds pharmaco-dynamics/kinetics. Methods To ensure coverage relevant literature, performed searches four databases (PubMed/Medline, ISI Web Knowledge, Scopus, ScienceDirect) per combinations keywords: “schizophrenia” “MK-801”, “ketamine”, “phencyclidine”, “mescaline”, “lysergic diethylamide”, “amphetamine”, “proline”, “methionine”, “zebrafish”. Eligible studies had be “research article(s)” written English. Results A total n = 246 were returned during established interval (2010 – 2022). Precisely, 16 identified PubMed/Medline, 17 197 ScienceDirect database.
